At the Back of Beyond
The photographs for “At the Back of Beyond” present a representation of transition: Natural elements inflicting themselves upon what has been, in the process of becoming a countenance of a larger emanation. In each instance, natural elements claim dominance over what was previously there and illustrate the transient aspect of natural balance and symbiotic discord. While this progression is continuously cyclical, each instance within the landscapes evolution is crucial to what the landscape will eventually become.
The photographs were inspired by the writings of Patti Smith in her book, “M Train” and the music of Tom Waits. These influences provoked consideration of how the same patterns of balance and discord are evident in the progression of human interpersonal interactions and, while often regarded with an emotional response of grief or sadness, are a necessary component of the process of life.
The only significance of life is the imprint of what is left in its wake.
